Anything like that Tico where you are?

I don't keep a track of these things but I would estimate that at least 10% of the top 300 soccer players here are on the injury list at any one time.

The question was how many top players in American football are on the injury list at any one time. That's the measure of how tough a game is when it's played with real passion.

I think the bigger question is how many of those soccer players injured themselves whilst diving following an imaginary tackle.

I don't keep track of these things either, but I can tell you most of my Fantasy NFL roster was injured at one time or another during the season.

Another question I would like to ask is how many of your players are of the build of a Ryan Giggs type? What's their average weight and height?

Depends on the position.

Offensive linemen average about 6'3" and about 300 pounds. (In 2003 the heaviest lineman weighed 390 pounds -- is that 22.9 stone?)

But the overall average height in the NFL is 6'1.5" and the average weight is 245 lbs.

LINK

I, myself, am 6'4" and weigh 235 pounds.

Those NFL players that are of the Ryan Giggs build -- and there may not be very many of them -- would probably tend to get injured more often than not. Particularly if a 300 pound lineman landed on them.

That's what I thought, Tico.

It seems, although I must admit to not knowing a lot about the rules, that the only thing that happens is that the "line up (out?) chucks the ball back to their quarterback, who then has to lob it to someone before getting flattened by the opposing team who are charging towards him.

If he succeeds, his target man must catch the ball and run with it to the other end of the pitch.

And that's it!

No team inter passing, which means no chance of "dummying" a pass and fooling an interceptor, no real flow at all, in fact, unless the ball holder actually manages to avoid the rampaging bulls and cross the line.

More often than not, the poor sod who catches the quarterback's ball is immediately flattened and play stops for god knows how long.

This process seems to be get repeated ad infinitum unless possession of the ball is won by the opposing team and then the whole process gets repeated again, but in the opposite direction.

I'm sure there's much more to it than that, but that's how it comes across.
Much more stop than start.

Like you say, it's a bit like an American trying to watch cricket, I suppose.

One might assume from that lot, Tico' injury list, that with only a very small percentage of the American male population between 20 and 30, say, being over 300lbs and 6ft 2 inches, and willing to train, and not on the injury list, that what you saw in the Superbowl had to be rounded up from the bars and persuaded with bribes of one sort or another to try to make it look good after some lucrative rehearsals of the type can-can girls used to do in the afternoons before the show for an invited audience.

I wondered why those three chaps chasing the "lucky" interception touchdowner were moving so slowly. But with the play being only a minor part of the show and with cute camera angles and masculine commentators providing the gloss and certain other tricks of which the viewers are not yet alerted to I would imagine W.C. Fields would have had a go.

There must be an opening here for big lunks. The more you knock out the easier it is to get youself on TV.

How many Americans are over 300 lbs Tico? Excluding the women, the children, the shagged out old hasbeens, the under 6ft 2ers, the easy riders, the middle class professionals, the drug abusers, etc etc. It can't be all that many.

Yes, much more to it than that, and there's quite a bit about what you said that was inaccurate, but I haven't time to correct your errors now (unless you're really interested). But you are quite correct about there being much more stop than start ... no flow at all, like there is with soccer.

Big news in Britain today...Friendly Fire coroner demands video tape of tankbuster action from MoD....MoD had previously told family of bereaved no tape of fatal incident existed...coroner demands it be shown in open court, MoD say it's American property and classified...meanwhile the Sun newspaper gets a copy (secretly from the MoD, to get them off the hook?)...tape shows that the pilots realised they had just killed some of their allies.

Messy.

Yes, strange how the Sun can suddenly produce this tape.

Home Office statement will now follow the lines of "Well, of course we couldn't release the tape without getting permission from the Yanks...but now it's in the public domain and all that....etc"

McT, what do you think about this plan for 600 bloody great pylons that are going to be strewn across the Highlands, to accomodate the high voltage cable from the wind farms?

Not really, we just like to have something/someone to hang out to dry when we lose. You deserved that win

Poms might beat NZ

NZ need 59 off 36 balls (4 wickets in hand)

Your cricketers seem to be coming good at the right moment. Have they been running a bye?

Don't know the story of the transmission towers.

But speaking of technology, and after having seen the new silent, clean motorbike shown on the TV this morning, I googled a bit and see that fuel cell technology is set to replace massive power transmission grids (but not anytime soon) for remote communities at least.
Yes, I know the wind farms are about getting power to cities. Shame. Coal mines are not great for the landscape either.

Check out the bike and the fuel cell stuff here- fantastic.

OK......joke of the day.

Two builders (Dave and Stuart) are seated either side of a table in a rough pub when a well-dressed man enters, orders a beer and sits on a stool at the bar.

The two builders start to speculate about the occupation of the man in the suit
Dave: - I reckon he's an accountant

Stuart: - No way - he's a stockbroker.

Dave: - He ain't a stockbroker! A stockbroker wouldn't come in here!

The argument repeats itself for some time until the volume of beer gets the better of Dave and he makes for the toilet. On entering the toilet he sees that the suit is standing at a urinal. Curiosity and the several beers get the better of him.

Dave: - 'Scuse me... no offence meant, but me and me mate were wondering what you do for a living?

Suit: - No offence taken! I'm a Logical Scientist by profession.

Dave: - Oh? What's that then?

Suit: - I'll try to explain by example ... Do you have a goldfish at home?

Dave: - Er ... mmm ... well yeah, I do as it happens!

Suit: - Well, it's logical that you keep it either in a bowl or in a pond. Which is it?

Dave: - It's in a pond!

Suit: - Well it's reasonable to suppose that you have a large garden then?

Dave: - As it happens, yes I have got a big garden.

Suit: - Well then it's logical to assume that, in this town, if you have a large garden then you have a large house?

Dave: - As it happens I've got a five bedroom house . built it myself!

Suit: - Well given that you've built a five bedroom house it's logical to assume that you haven't built it just for yourself and that you are quite probably married?

Dave: - Yes I am married, I live with my wife and four children.

Suit: - Well then it is logical to assume that you are sexually active with your wife on a regular basis?

Dave: - Yep! Five times a week!

Suit: - Well then it is logical to suggest that you don't m*sturbate very often?

Dave: - Do what? Not me, mate!

Suit: - Well there you are! That's logical science at work!

Dave: - How's that then?

Suit: - Well from finding out that you had a goldfish, I've told you about your sex life!

Dave: - I see! That's pretty impressive. Thanks mate!

Both leave the toilet and Dave returns to his mate.

Stuart: - I see the suit was in there. Did you ask him what he does?

Dave: - Yep! He's a logical scientist!

Stuart: - What's that then?

Dave: - I'll try and explain. Do you have a goldfish?

Stuart: - Nope

Dave: - Well then, you're a w*nker.

Excellent Ellpus. It's just a pity you lost patience and didn't make more of a meal of it. Dave could have been made to look silly considering the logical possibilities of five times a week as a settled married man. So silly in fact that Stuart could have been made to look the sensible one.

Perhaps you have a guilt complex about wanking which Robert de Niro proved he didn't share in that brilliant scene in Extras with the pen.

It's a brilliant vehicle for a small psychological masterpiece actually but I think I'll go and watch the Highlights of our brave cricketer's late run up the outside.
