The living room is where you would entertain your adult guests. Has a TV, is neat and tidy, near to the kitchen.

The family room is more the domain of the kids, might be larger, messier, have an exercise bike or toys in it.

I think that the distinction has to do with the level of formality. A "living room" is usually more formal than a family room. In some homes a family room may be called a den.

In many homes, the lines have been blurred, so that the differences have no real meaning. Now comes along the concept of the "great room", which basically can be whatever you want it to be.

I think that the room distinctions have to do with a family's lifestyle. For instance, in a formal living room, you probably would not find a TV. There would be sofas and side chairs, and would be used to entertain guests.

I have a television in my living room, as I do not live a very formal lifestyle. In the family room, you might find a TV, possibly a pool table, or a game table.
