HOUSTON -- A Houston company was awarded a contract to create NASA's next spacecraft, creating hundreds of new jobs in the area, KPRC Local 2 reported.
NASA announced Friday that the contract was awarded Lockheed Martin.
Officials said the contract is worth about $8 billion.
The new spacecraft, Orion, will replace NASA's aging shuttle fleet.
Experts said the contract will give the area a big economic boost.
"Eleven hundred new jobs created by the announcement," said Bob Mitchell with the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership. "That doesn't include the secondary jobs."
Most of the positions will be for highly skilled engineers and software designers, careers that pay an average of $75,000 a year.
