Which one is correct?
(A) I think the crux may be whose status the phrase "in pain/in agony" describes, the subject's or the the verb's executor's.
or
(B) I think the crux may be whose status the phrase "in pain/in agony" describes, the subject or the the verb's executor.

(A) is correct, but take out the extra "the" in that sentence.
