Going on the pill- Period today?

Reply Wed 30 Aug, 2006 03:17 pm
Hey guys..
I started on the contraceptive pill yesterday, I've taken another one today and I believe my period is due around now. Should I still expect one? If I don't get one should I take a pregnacy test? We've been quite careful and have used condoms sensibly but I'm quite concerned. Little advice?

The pregnancy test doesn't work unless you should be menstruating, or its seven days post-conception. I THINK I should be menstruating but it's not always on the exact day. Would taking the pill now hurt my unborn baby? (If there is one?!)

Can I ask why you started yesterday?

Most of the time (in my experience) they tell you to start, for example, the Sunday after your period.

yeah i went to the clinic and they said i could start 'today'. I realise now that waiting for my period would have been a totally better idea. but that's not the facts- and now, I'm worried. :p

Hmm.

I'm not sure how much 2 pills will have accomplished (I think they tell you to be on a full months' worth before getting definite protection), maybe you can stop, wait for your period, and go from there?

Don't take my word for it though, call the clinic and ask.

You can start the pill whenever you like, however, typically doctors' suggest taking it the Sunday after your last period. Then typically you will not a period on the weekend and you keep your normal cycle. Also, my doctor and pill instructions say it is effective after two weeks. Also, the pill tends to make your periods lighter and shorter - and some side effects can also cause you to miss a period. If you have followed the doctor's instructions precisely then it is 99% effective and I wouldn't bother and wait another month.

I'd say yes, if you are due you will probably get your period this month. But there is always the chance that you won't. Or it will be very very light.

You might have a few months of messed up periods as your body adjusts to being on a schedule.

As for the pill hurting a baby. No. The pill doesn't show to hurt babies when taken in early pregnancy. So keep taking your pill. If you don't get your period NEXT month as well, then take the test.

I don't know about that, Bella. I know mine says "do not take if pregnant," and I seem to remember that while the morning after pill is more concentrated and works better, it's basically the same idea as a regular birth control pill. As in, taking a regular birth control pill as a "morning after pill" may have the same effect.

I'll see what I can find about that.

I was just at the ob/gyn 3 weeks ago and he told me that being on the pill doesn't hurt the baby if you should become pregnant while on it. The reason that they have you stop it months before becoming pregnant isn't for health reasons but to better date your due date.

You shouldn't, however, continue taking the pill for a long time if you think you're pregnant.

If you miss your period, take a pregnancy test. But don't stop your pills.

Similar to Bella - I was told that there is no evidence that the pill will hurt a baby, however, it is suggested if it is likely you are pregnant - to stop taking the pill as there is no evidence that it will not hurt the baby either. Pretty much to err on the side of caution rather than any proven evidence.
