Etymological meaning of Gestreept in Dutch?
I know this word means Zebra in English.
What I want to know is that how the Dutch gave this animal that name.

A Zebra is called ... is called 'Zebra' in Dutch.

'gestreept' means "striped".

Walter has it correct, which only shows he is keenly interested in his next door neighbours Smile

Anyways, the Zebra is of course noted for it's distinct black and white pattern. This pattern is often seen as it's most defining characteristic, which comes back in the dutch name for pedestrian crossings, namely 'Zebrapad', 'Zebra path' Perhaps this fairly strong link of the word Zebra with the word Gestreept has been the cause of your honest mistake.

PS. For my credentials in this matter, I'm dutch.

Do you mean Gestreept means zebra in Dutch without the sense of "striped"?

"Gestreept" means "striped", "Zebra" means "zebra", "Zebrapad" means "zebra crossing" (crosswalk).
