hamburger, this doesn't have anything to do with small little shops closing down in the middle of the day. This isn't about US greed, it's about a standard of living that's above a monkey in a steamy jungle.
Are you suggesting that all business in existance, high rises, office buildings, manufacturing plants, hotels, hosptials, doctors, lawyers, turn off the the AC, remove the glass from their 5th story windows and put up screens?
You think thousands of buildings full of people are going to function when it's 100 degrees plus with 90% humidity for days/weeks at a time? That temperature lasts from 10am to 7pm many times.
The people in your picture are a stereotype that most Mexican Americans would find offensive as far as suggesting they put on their sombreros and nap over the noon hours.
Come on....talk sense. I wish ehbeth would return so I can figure out what people who say we can live productive lives without AC would do to eleviate the heat stroke, dyhydration and overall tension this would assure.
To even attempt a change like this, the entire infrastructure of 100's of cities and towns would have to be drastically changed. Even if massive changes were made, you would still end up with miserable, sick unhappy people. I'm trying to imagine, for instance, surgery being preformed on a person under such conditions, or women giving birth, or frankly, even having sex.
It makes as much sense as giving up automobiles, air travel, modern medical technology and so on.
