I love this story.

A 2000+ year-old text written by the greek mathematician, archimedes, was discovered in 1899 beneath prayers which were written over the erased scholarly writing 700 years ago. Technology wasn't able to recover much of the 'hidden text. The current owner hired a group to 'read' the original text by using ultraviolet light, first, and now by using a particle accelerator which emits x-ray bursts to pick up the text where it can be viewed on a computer screen.

The scribe not only erased the text lived during a 'parchment shortage' - funny to consider a parchment shortage - he also forged bits and pieces to make the book look more authentic. The man responsible for connecting the book with the accelerator is a man who studies photosynthesis in spinach. Imagine the turn his life took!

These chunks of time are astounding for something so fragile, paper text and natural dye.

Anyway, you can read about it, see more pictures or lsiten to the story at http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5583668

The Palimpsest (a book with secret writing) is the focus of Project Palimpsest. There's a website devoted to the text and the project.

The various imagin they tried:

There will be a live webcast august 4th at 4pm PST.

I may not have the exact quote, but in The Tempest Caliban announces, "You taught me language and my profit on it is I know how to curse."

Yes, we've discovered WMD and germ warfare as well as creating the Greenhouse Effect and Global Pollution.

We also have Scholars of Spinach who find Greek Mathematics.

Oh Brave New World, that hast such people in it.

There are several cool facets to this tale. I wonder what else they'll find. So, for those who haven't clicked the links..... Archimedes was discussing infinity. He had several types of infinity he discussed. All very advanced for his time.

Palimpsests were made precisely because of parchment shortages...

I heard this on NPR yesterday. Thanks for posting, littlek.

I loved the part about the scientist visiting his mother, and like a good mother she had gathered some things for him to read... One article being about this find. When he read it he was able to mentally connect the machine he was using to study iron in spinach with the possibility that it could also read iron in the ink.

Imagine if his mother had not saved that article for him! Very Happy
