here, i guess the surfer is going to make a big jump but i don't really know if it's a good or bad thing (like it's an intentional jump or some fall).

and so, what does the narrator mean when he's talking about one-hit-wonder.
is the jump going to be too big (so, is he going to take too much air?) so, the landing will probably be messy and he won't be able to do anything else of value before the end of the run?

This is how I see it:

You are right, this is a big one.

I take this to refer to the wave size. Just one chance to get it right.
