Diabetes and Enuresis

Hi,

I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes around my 21st birthday last September. For a period beforehand an old childhood problem of nocturnal enuresis had begun to resurface, and it continued and worsened after the diagnosis. Having been rid of the problem for over 7 years, my parents thought it was stress-related. I soon discovered that enuresis can actually be a symptom of diabetes, so now I'm assuming my condition has caused this to resurface. I underwent a hypnosis course from September through to January with moderate success, but the conditioned worsened again when I came off the course. My younger brother, a more chronic sufferer than I ever was, recently went on a course of DesmoPressin pills, and they stopped the problem immediately. I went to my doctor and was prescribed the same course of pills, but they've done nothing, I even feel like they make it worse.

I was sick recently and quite dehydrated for a few days afterwards, during which time my high fluid intake resulted in several dry nights during which I awoke two or three times to go to the bathroom. Does this mean my body is simply desensitized to the urge to urinate?

Could anyone shed some light on this issue for me?

What's the best course of action? Do many diabetics suffer from enuresis? What can be done?

Thanks.

I wish I could help, but I can't. Have you looked into the diabetes foundation website? I bet there are forums somewhere for support. Have you looked?

My boyfriend is a pediatrician and says the only thing you can do it to control your sugars more. Test yourself before every meal and before bed, and limit your fluid intake after say 7pm.

If that's the case, then how could hypnosis have helped?

My sugars are quite well controlled, too.

There must be something that can be done. How common is it among diabetics?

hypnosis doesn't help anything. there are many studies that show hypnosis does absolutely nothing. it's your willingness to submit to it that makes you do it.

there is a really simple mechanism for the enuresis... your kidneys strain out sugar. your kidneys become hypotonic (too little water) and so they absorb more water to regain an isotonic balance, and you excrete the sugar/water. it's all about osmotic pressure.

Okay, but whether it's the hypnosis itself or my willingness to submit to it seems incidental. The point is it had a positive effect that was not related to a change in my sugar levels or my fluid intake. So how could that be?

So that's why there's an excess of urine, but you're telling me that there's no way I can train myself to wake up to it?

I'm not sure about your training yourself... that would seem to indicate a neuological issue... your bladder isn't sending the correct signal to your brain, or your brain isn't processing it correctly. you should go ask a urologist and/or neuologist. maybe you have a pinched/damanged nerve.
