"My students are always giving me lip!"

Could anyone explain this phrase "giving me lip" to me? Thanks in advance!

hey little crab nice to see you again.

we use our mouths and lips to speak with.

Giving lip is making slightly rude and perhaps humerous answers or statements about or to someone.

In Aust. we might say they were being cheeky, or giving cheek.

Hi, dadpad, thank you for your quick reply. I learned something new in a group- cheeky, give cheek and give lip. Thanks again!
