The immense dirt pile in my backyard proves that the worms are organized to take over the planet. I don't see the Times out there photographing it though.
I think he has every right to put up such a sculpture in his churchyard and I think it is silly that people are offended by it.
I meant to add that what I DO find offensive is his notion that many blacks are not patriotic.
This statue proves that the sculptor ripped the main idea off from Bartholdi. It also proves that I will never live in Memphis.
Actually, I find it mightily offensive, since I don't believe in Jesus (shock horror!) but yes, the guy's got the right to put the statue on his property. And I have the right to never want to look at it. Jesus Christ isn't lord over a lot of us in America, and I don't enjoy the leap of logic that a lot of folks go to once they've become aware of that notion, that perhaps those of us who are not Christian might not be real Americans or entitled to full citizenship.
Yes, that leap still happens. It's why we have a First Amendment.
PS I agree with you, boomer, re the thing about blacks not being patriotic is offensive, too. This is just a lovefest all around.
