[help] What do they exactly want to know by asking this?

When I was chatting with someone unknown, they would ask: what do you do? When people asking this what do they want to know? My job? I'm not sure, so I posted here, hope to get some help. Thanks in advance.

what do you do? it means that which career do you do now, in my view.

correct.

the expression is short for "what do you do for a living?"
