What does this sentence meaning "Jack broke down into tears and my heart went out to her"?

"Jack broke down into tears" is a fancy way of saying Jack started crying. "My heart went out to her" is a fancy way of saying I felt sorry for her. The sentence basically means, "Jack started crying and I felt sorry for her."
