In Australia it's commonly "hit the roof".

In U.S., when "roof" is used, the expression is "went through the roof". The two expressions mean the same thing; however the images formed would appear to show more anger when penetrating the roof. Hitting the ceiling would present a least violent image, but all three are mighty angry.
