Re: How to distinct those words?
First, i will correct what you've written:
How can one distinguish these words? They all have a similar meaning: enormous, giant, great, huge, immense, large, vast, tremerdous
and gigantic.
***************************************
You have giant and gigantic in the same group, which is sort of an error and sort of not an error. Giant is used as an adjective, although properly, gigantic ought to be used, as giant is a noun. However, you are correct in that English-speakers commonly use giant as an adjective.
In most cases, there is no distinction between these words, but there are subtle differences. Enormous, gigantic, immense, huge and tremendous are usually used to distinguish that which is extraordinarily large from that which is merely large. Vast usually has a spatial sense--a lake may be vast, the ocean is vast--things which are vast cover a extensive space.
The word great can mean large, but it can also mean excellent--it does not automatically mean large; in fact, it only means large in a context which one recognizes as referring to size.
