There is a dance up at Crosby's barn tonight.I can't understand why the "up" is here.Could you do me a favor?

For that matter what about "shut up" or "Make up?" Don't try to understand it, just accept it, and, if you're someone learning English as a second language, try to get a feeling for the meaning. If you try to understand it, you'll have to understand why "up" is in "give up," "out" is in "find out," and so on almost without end.
