What does "bump into"mean? Thank you!
Hi Sunflowerbbs.
?'Bump' - Hit, Knock, Strike, Bash. (Slang - Meet).
?'Bump into' - Unexpected contact.
(It was dark and I bump(ed) into the kitchen table.)
(The train was so crowded you cannot help but bump into people.)
?'Bump into' - Unexpected meeting.
(I took the dog out for a walk, and I bump(ed) into my teacher.)
(I always bump into people I know when I go shopping.)
I hope that helps.
Hi Sunflowerbbs, I'll add only one more explanation to Tryagain's post clarifying that the first two examples are physical, actually hitting something. The second, meaning you met someone unexpectedly doesn't always mean that you literally bumped into him/her--only that you 'saw' each other.
Welcome to a2k.
Thank you Lady Diane for your warm welcome. You have clarified the saw/met point. I think I understand now.
