I think it's from people used to use hay to stuff their mattresses.

Hay is a plant that is normally feed to horses and other livestock, and when it dries, it's called straw.

Not to confuse the word.....but in English it is a little impolite to call out to someone "Hey" (notice the e instead of the a in hey. The 2 words are pronounced the same)

A funny response when someone calls out "Hey" to you is to say...."Hay is for Horses!"

Hey/Hay....get it?
