Hello:
I came into a sentence "The Spaniard have it that a buxon widow must be either married , buried, or shut up in a convent. " What does 'it' mean?
Thanks a lot ?
I won't say that it's true, but it means that oversize women in Spain have no chance for marriage.
Thank you

"The Spaniards have (the idea) that a buxon widow must be either married , buried, or shut up in a convent. "
Joe Nation
"The Spaniards have it that..." just means "As the Spaniards say....", or alternatively you could put "In Spain, it is said that..."
Even better, McTag, well said.
