Could anyone tell me the meaning of the following sentence:"She drew the blind to curtain off this merry sight."?
And there's another sentence I can't understand:"he paid me 20 bucks under the table."Does buck mean a dollar?and what does "under the table"mean?
The first sentence about drawing the blind means "someone has lowered the blinds or otherwise blocked the view from anyone trying to see inside,
and "curtain off this merry sight" means preventing anyone from an uninvited view of a private matter by either using curtains, blinds, shades or shutters to assure yourself a bit of privacy. (from anyone just being nosey)
20 bucks is indeed 20 dollars, and it could mean that it was actually handed to someone under a table to prevent anyone else from noticing, or sometimes "under the table" means it is not accounted for in order to evade any tax it could be subjected to, or otherwise be accounted for.
Hope that helps.
