The term comes from movie making.

The movie technique is called "soft fade". The screen gets blurred.

Memories can be blurred because of time, alcohol, self-protection or
because the viewer really didn't think that particular moment was important.

Also think of ink on paper--the meaning of characters or words can be blurred by accident.
