In the sentensce"But if he focuses on commmercial work ,he'll be acused of dumbing downd"? What't meaning of "dumb down"?
"Dumb" is a dialect word which means "stupid".
"Dumbing down" an explanation is making the explanation very, very simple simple.
Commercial work tp be successful must have broad, general appeal--otherwise it won't sell. The speaker assumes that the artist would have to speak artistic baby talk to appeal to commercial clients.
