All thoughts of risk were shelved as Smith now looked for a safe way home.
(before that, Smith made a huge tumble)

Can someone please help me understand this sentence?
Did Smith try to forget about the risk he's taking, did he put aside his thoughts of falling down on his way home ?

Yes, he put aside all thoughts of risks in order to get home.

He figuratively took the risk and put it up on a shelf.
