Can you tell me how to understand the phrase "white lies " formally.

"White lies" are what we call untruths which are told out of kindness, or to avoid awkwardness.
If some piece information might be upsetting to a particular listener (for example, a parent talking to a child) then a lie might be told which would be easier for them to understand, or less upsetting for them. That would be a "white lie".
