Here is a paragraph:
I have been divorced for twelve years and I found the whole thing ( the process of breakup and divorce) to be distinctly painful so I am not rushing to do the same thing again - to put it mildly.
Could you tell me what the relation between "to put it mildly" and the rest of the paragraph is? and what "to put it mildly" means here? Thanks!
It means "I have not overstated the case, in fact I have under-stated it. I will most definitely not be doing that again."
Here "mild" is used as the opposite of "strong", and "put" in this case means "write" or "say"
Thank you very much, McTag
