We cannot really help you without seeing the sentences in which you read those words and phrases.

Couple means to join, if it is used as a verb--as a noun, it usually means a pair, and often refers to two people who are emotionally close, such as a man and a woman who are in love.

The expression "better off" means that the person or persons referred to have more money or a more secure financial situation than those to whom they are compared.

The expression "on account of" usually means the same thing as the word "because."

If you come back and write out the sentence or sentences in which you have read these things, you will get a better answer.
