One setence in our text book"Stephen is coming here for tea ,bid you all goodbye".How to understand "bid"here?
I think that the sentence would be better if it was, "I bid you all goodbye".
That would refer to a greeting. It is kind of an awkward sentence, and would not be used often.
Understand "bid"
"Bid" is the present tense of the verb "to bid". The past tense of this verb is "bade". It means "to tell". You cam also use it as a command to do something.
I think a preposition was omitted - the sentence makes sense if you say "to bid you all goodbye".
