My guess would be B, Uncle Tom.

Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a famous book against slave ownership in the Southern USA, which is called: "Uncle Tom's cabin" (1852)
In this book, the main character, Uncle Tom, is at several occasions whipped and finally dies.
It's very famous and Uncle Tom's suffering has become exemplary for the slavery in the south.
