The other day,I encountered a sentence :She turned off the record player in order that her roommates could study .I do remember teacher told us we should never use "can"or"could"after "in order that ",but "so that".So how to explain this one.And what other differencesbetween them.

I don't see any great problem with that sentence.

we should never use "can"or"could"after "in order that ",but "so that".

She turned off the record player in order that her roommates could study.

Both are acceptable english.
