what does this sentence mean: "I was not killed in action in France,but

circumstances over which I had no control kept me abroad all these years

"

What a strange sentence. For someone to say they were not killed is pretty obvious -- if you're talking, you're not dead! They also add that there is some reason why they're away from home, but they don't clarify it.
