The phrase was made popular by a Maxwell House Coffee commercial.

Hot coffee can be delicious. Lukewarm or cold coffee is much less appealing because much of the flavor of coffee comes from the smell rather than from the taste.

Cold Maxwell House Coffee tastes just like all other brands of cold coffee--but the language of the ad has passed into the English language.
