Huh. As a near-northern (as opposed to far-northern, I guess) Californian, I only ever heard talk of the state splitting in two right around Monterey.

Orygun never came into it.

The campaign to create the State of Jefferson was diverted by Pearl Harbor.
http://www.civil-liberties.com/factoids/jefferson.htm

The congressional vote to form the state was slated for December the 8th of 1941. The repercussions of Japan's attack ended the promising future of the State of Jefferson when the vote was lost in the confusion of that fateful day.

Although always thwarted, the movement has revived periodically since 1941, and is still alive in the hearts of many today. There are many businesses that carry the name of Jefferson in Northern California and Southern Oregon. You can still see signs that say "State of Jefferson" on them. The State of Jefferson's "official" money is the two dollar bill, because it has Thomas Jefferson on it, of course.

Sorry, these have nothing to do with Alaska and Canada. Will be back shortly with links to state secession movements, that perhaps Alaska could follow.

Hmmm. Jefferson would have great weed (Humboldt) and hot springs (Lassen). Think I'll get in touch with their tourist bureau...

I still say let's secede from the U.S. With Microsoft in our new country, we could rule the world. But for good, not for evil.

On second thought, forget about Microsoft. In our new nation, they'd finally be brought under some sort of control...

Hmmm. Could Illinois be persuaded to extradite Boeing execs for new and retroactive anti-dick laws?

Sure, why not? (Only what means "anti-dick"--not having one or hating them?)

The latter. If it's the former, I'm leaving.

Right. A former friend recently moved to Chicago, too. I feel the same way about her as I do about the Boeing execs. Don't let the door hit you on the way out...

I've got no problem with mobility; I've been pretty nomadic myself. But the thought of those guys moving away so that they wouldn't have to see the people they lay off makes my blood boil. (ooh! ouch! eee!)

Agreed on both counts. I, too, have been nomadic, but when corporations leave, there's usually a lot more at stake!
