"the old wolf" could be used in several ways do you have a sentance/paragraph it has been used in. Context can be important to the meaning of words and phrases.

I would take it to mean a person who can be a little sly and perhaps not entirly trustworthy, but intelligent as well.

"The old wolf" could be another way of saying "dirty old man". Years ago, a "wolf" was a predatory man, a womanizer.

Quote:
wolf
n., pl. wolves

Either of two carnivorous mammals of the family Canidae, especially the gray wolf of northern regions, that typically live and hunt in hierarchical packs and prey on livestock and game animals.
The fur of such an animal.
Any of various similar or related mammals, such as the hyena.
The destructive larva of any of various moths, beetles, or flies.
One that is regarded as predatory, rapacious, and fierce.
Slang. A man given to paying unwanted sexual attention to women.
