Opportunity is knocking!

I met my newish neighbors today. They have a son who is just about six months younger than Mo.

Mo speaks no Spanish and "A.D." speaks no English.

I'm thinking this might be a great opportunity to cross learn a new language for both boys.

But how do you start!?

I know nothing about teaching language.

Would just getting them together to play be a good start or should I have some plan?

Help!

Is there a board game they both know? Something like Candy Land, which I seem to recall is based on knowing colors. They will probably figure out how to communicate on their own if they have something to interact with.

That's a good idea.

We know a family with a kid a bit younger than sozlet who, when we first met, only spoke Polish -- she definitely got exasperated, though she enjoyed spending time with him in general (they waltzed a lot Laughing). Since then he's picked up a lot of English though and now they're mostly talking in English.

So that's kinda both ways -- kids pick up other languages scary-quick, especially in an immersion environment, but there's likely to be exasperation at the beginning.

Some sort of activity that doesn't require language sounds good, if only digging holes.

Just let them play together and they'll learn from each other. When little
Jane was around 4 years old, I had friends from Germany visit and their
daughter was a year older. The two girls somehow understood each other
and had no trouble playing together.

Now, years later, they speak German when they get together. My friends
girl is more shy in speaking English, so they settled for German.

Okay then! I'll take the play/learn route.

It is really nice to have another kid Mo's age in the neighborhood and I would love to have him start learning another language, especially Spanish, at this young age.

Thank you all.

What a great opportunity! Even better if they end up in kindergarten together. Keep us posted.
