An antibiotic made from a microbe found in soil can kick the butts of the superbugs, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus bacterias.
Everyone, meet Platensimycin from South Africa (use as directed).
SCI AM
Wow!
Use as directed, indeed. Would be great if it can keep on butt-kicking for a while.
Way to go! According to a doctor that I know, over 28% of people in the US are carriers of community based MRSA. Over the years, the overuse of antribiotics has caused some of the bacteria to mutate, so that the standard antibacterials have become ineffective.
For many years, Vancomycin was the medication of choice, but some doctors have found even that to be ineffective against the more virulent strains of MRSA. Linezolid (Zyvox) has now become the antibacterial agent of last resort, as well as Cubicin. It is heartening to know that the medical community is beginning to get a lead on other possible agents to use against MRSA.
