Stag nights, or "buck's nights" as we call them in Australia, are a traditional celebration undertaken by a man who is about to marry and his male friends, to celebrate his marriage and his last night of "freedom" before it takes place. They can be raunchy and wild.

Hen's nights are the same ritual for women who are about to marry.

continuing on from that....

a "hen party" is a joking name for when a few women get together....so named because it's assumed the women will be gossiping, and hens in a group cluck and make a lot of noise.

"going stag" for a man, means you're going alone to a party, without a woman. The implication is you're looking for a woman.
