Mercury disposal...Help, urgently!

I have just managed to break a mercury thermometer whilst trying to sterilise it. There's a tiny glob of mercury in the bottom of a cup, how do I dispose of it safely?

I believe that most fire stations can dispose of it; I suggest that you call them or the poison hotline for assistance.

Yeah, just thought I'd better say, I've got rid of it now.

Rang my local pharmacy and the pharmacist offered to dispose it for free.
