Chinese Style - There're a lot of sparrows stopping on the telephone lines.
American Style - There're a lot of sparrows sitting on the telephone lines.
Sparrows:
Telephone lines:
Lot= many
It's when you have many birds on a wire....

Oh! I don't know about English or American but when I translate some other language, "sparrows on the line" means scratchs and noises over the phone...

There are a lot of sparrows sitting on the telephone lines.
It means "There are a large number of sparrows sitting on the telephone lines."
Or...is that: "There IS a large number of sparrows sitting on the telephone lines."????
I can't do grammar any more.

aaaahhh i get it. when one is on the telephone, say long distance, and there is some interferance in the form of electronic noise we used to say there were a lot of birds sitting on the wire, alluding to the fact that their feet or their twittering was interfering with the transmission of the telephone conversation. In the old days when telecommunications were not so good some days there was more electronic noise and some times there was very little electronic noise.
This is actually a bit of a joke (humor) because we know birds perching on telephone lines dont interfere with telephone transmissions.

It means that, pursuant to the USA Patriot Act, the NSA is monitoring your telephone calls, and soon, two humorless men in bad, off-the-rack suits will appear at your door to take you away.
