I am beside myself with anger. How to explain this sentense ?

If not, sorry to have butted in.
You are so puffed up with anger and rage that you have doubled in size. You, your "normal" self, is no accompanied by a creature of rage. You are "beside" yourself.
My take on this is you're so mad you can't stand to be in your own body and you've flung yourself out of it.
Good question
Thank you.
