I came across this idiom "settle for" ,can anyone please show me how to use it?

He wanted the Peking Duck, but it was unavailable, so he settled for the steamed duck with mushrooms.
She wanted the new edition of her textbook, but it had sold out, so she settled for a good second hand copy.
