A squad of American soldiers was patrolling along the Iraqi border. To their surprise, they found the badly mangled dead body of an Iraqi soldier in a ditch along side the road.
A short distance up the road, they found a badly mangled American soldier in a ditch on the other side of the road, who was still barely alive. They ran to him, cradled his blood-covered head and asked him what had happened.

"Well," he whispered, "I was walking down this road, armed to the teeth. I came across this heavily armed Iraqi border guard. I looked him right in the eye and shouted, "Saddam Hussein is an unprincipled, lying piece of trash!"

He looked me right in the eye and shouted back, "Bill Clinton, Tom Daschle, Ted Kennedy and most of your Democrats are unprincipled, lying pieces of trash, too!"

"We were standing there shaking hands when the truck hit us."

That's dumb. I think you got this joke wrong...

Most Iraqi's really hate George Bush and Rumsfeld. I doubt the average Iraqi knows who Daschel or Kennedy are, and certainly have no reason to hate them.

It's Abu Graib, and Bush's insistence on developing new Nuclear weapons (i.e. WMDs) that really make this joke work.

(I still don't think it's very funny)

I bet it started out Hussein/ Bush, with stuff about "murdering tyrant" or something -- that'd make more sense -- and then the premise was adjusted.

Yes...

I shared this joke within the happy, mostly conservative bastion of the Roundtable. The group was murdered:), and some threads (like this one) were opened to public viewing.

Just doesn't translate on the wider forum....

that thing that strikes me about both republicans and democrats is their equally heroic acceptance of the sufferings of others.

Actually, I believe it started out as FDR and Hitler.

ebrown, I'm sure you're right about the relative ignorance of most Iraqis re Daschle or Kennedy. On the other hand, "Most" Iraqis don't hate Bush or Rumsfeld, Abu Graib is far more remembered for its sinister connection with Saddam's (actually, more Uday's) thugs and deathsquads than for any connection with the occupation forces, and American weapons systems development is by and large given no more consideration than we might give to developments in Ugandan veterinary practice.

The Iraqi-in-the-street understandably isn't thrilled to be resident in what amounts to an occupied country, but is thankful to be rid of Saddam and the Ba'athists, grateful to those who brought that about, fed up with the insurgents, and relatively optimistic about the future, even if a bit skeptical of the current indigenous government. Oddly, despite the approaching national elections, there is little apparent organized political activity.

I dunno, and don't much care, where you get your information on the Iraqi Public Mood, but I get mine mostly via letter and email exchanges and online chats with folks who are there, and who are in daily working and social contact with Iraqis in several cities and a couple different rural areas. My son is there (volunteered for his second tour), as are a niece and a couple nephews (one of whom also volunteered for a second tour), and a number of other freinds or acquaintances, military and civilian, known either independently or through them. Included among that group are in fact a few Iraqis. A couple of them are more or less just learning English, and while their skills attendant thereto are improving, they still manage to crack everybody up once in a while during live chats.

The several friends and relatives of mine who are in or have been in Iraq concur with Timber's take on this. The insurgents are crazy as loons, full of hate, and respect nobody. These are the ones getting most of the press in the U.S. media. Very little of the good things, and most of it are good things, is getting much if any media attention.

Okay is this funny? (Gleaned from today's e-mail - source unknown)

Death of a Senator:

A powerful senator dies after a prolonged illness. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

"Welcome to Heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you."

"No problem, just let me in," says the guy.

"Well, I'd like to but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in Hell and one in Heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity."

"Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in Heaven," says the senator.

"I'm sorry but we have our rules." And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to Hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a club and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him, everyone is very happy and in evening attire. They run to greet him, hug him, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster and caviar. Also present is the Devil, who really is a very friendly guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go. Everyone gives him a big hug and waves while the elevator rises. The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on Heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him. "Now it's time to visit Heaven."

So 24 hours pass with the head of state joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.

"Well then, you've spent a day in Hell and another in Heaven. Now choose your eternity."

He reflects for a minute, then the senator answers, "Well, I would never have said it, I mean Heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in Hell." So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to Hell.

Now the doors of the elevator open and he is in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags. The Devil comes over to him and lays his arm on his neck.

"I don't understand," stammers the senator. "Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and club and we ate lobster and caviar and danced and had a great time. Now all there is, a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable.

The Devil looks at him, smiles and says, "Yesterday we were campaigning...Today you voted for us!"

VOTE WISELY THIS COMING ELECTION!!

"the truth" as if the truth were some independent verifiable existent phenonum held without preconception or bias, this is, at best, an absurd conjecture held by both conservative and liberal adherents with the intent to persuade others to "see the light" as they see it. unfortunately the prisim of reality gets in the way rendering the observer of "the truth" blinded by the light of their own need to own facts. I cannot see your truth any more than you can see mine and the problem arrises because you or I are all to well anchored in our own myopia of "the truth." we are all colour blind to different colours.

The insurgents are "crazy as loons"? And this is somehow helpful in understanding what the hell is going on in Iraq?

I don't admire them, but to write them off as lunatics seems a little odd. How can crazy people get it together to do so much damage? I've been around truly crazy people; they ain't too effective...

Well I know some crazy people who are able to create a whole lot of mayhem in a very short period of time. Maybe you're lucky to not have any of those in your town.

Maybe you consider it sane and rational to strap bombs on a person really no more than a kid or send him to die in an explosive rigged vehicle so he can receive promised virgins from Allah. I don't consider that really rational.

Someone standing on a street corner, shouting at no one I can see--that's crazy. An isolated lunatic stabbing a stranger--that's crazy, too.

Coordinating a mass insurgency is far different. It may be hateful, but it's not crazy.

Foxfyre,

Someone comes, invades and occupies your country. They mistreat your fellow citizens in prison and set up a puppet government. They are from a religion you don't like and take actions which you see are against the government you would like to see in your country.

What do you consider rational in this case?

You may not strap bombs on yourself, but wouldn't you consider it right (and even rational) to risk your own life for the sake of God and country?

If you died in this struggle, wouldn't you expect your reward in heaven?
