@Lash,
Nah. I've eaten them for decades, pre all this mod stuff. Did you read the article?
Before genetic modification, there was hybridizing.

@margo,
OK, Beth and Margo, this is for us, from my favorite news source in my last home town area in Humboldt County, northern California: how to make Georgian Dumplings; as the writer says, that's the country, not the U.S. state.

http://www.northcoastjournal.com/humboldt/good-golly-khinkali/Content?oid=3593591

I'd like to just print the whole thing (not too long, not too difficult, rather heartwarming...), but I'll leave the link and let you have at it.

This I'm going to do.

Oh, all right, just the photo - (recipe is in the link)

@ehBeth,
I just studied the recipe - I can do it.

plus, I like the ingredients. Maybe even the instruction at the end..

I've never actually had a straight shot of any booze, what a thought, but if anything would let me tolerate it, it might be those dumplings.

@ehBeth,
Really? I remember liking her but not knowing much about where she was. I lived there from early '99 to late '05. Boy, is it different than here.

Mmm, wonder if we were ever in the same place at the same time.

@ossobuco,
without digging out an old envelope, I remember her as being close to Humboldt Hill, just outside of Eureka

it came to me when I looked at a couple of restaurant reviews when I clicked in through your link - recognized some of the town names from pm's and phone calls

@ehBeth,
Yes, Humboldt Hill was just down 101 from the road up to the higher part of the main town area, Harris Street, where, when I was first there, my soon to be business partner had at that time a garden center..

I lived for a month in a rental place, while I was looking for a house; that wasn't all that far from the Humboldt Hill area - but soon I was mid town, very walkable to Old Town,

Small world.

@ossobuco,
I’m making Swiss steak, mashed potatoes and fresh broccoli for dinner. Swiss steak is so easy and very inexpensive to make. I've made it before and the kids love it.

Following this recipe.

Swiss Steak

Quote:
2 pounds beef bottom round, trimmed of excess fat
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup vegetable oil or bacon drippings
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 stalks celery, chopped
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 cups beef broth

@ossobuco,
Really?

It's actually very good and easy to make. Slow cook it long enough and the meat is very tender. Inexpensive, easy delicious meal.

@jcboy,
I think I've had just the meat once, but not with all those trimmings and slow cooked. Not very palatable.

@ehBeth,
Never heard of bialys before. Didn't know about scones until I had one in the UK, and been enjoying them ever since.

The Canadian Prime Minister will be visiting the White House tomorrow night.

On the menu:

Quote:
The menu for about 200 people, designed by White House executive chef Cris Comerford, features delicacies such as Alaskan halibut casserole, roasted apricot galette with Appalachian cheese and lamb chops drizzled with Yukon Jack Canadian Whisky. One of the canapés is an American take on duck poutine, Ms. Comerford said.

“There’s so much commonality in here, it’s just like cooking for your brother. It’s really kind of awesome,” Ms. Comerford said.

The dessert is a maple pecan cake and a Rocky Mountain sugar sculpture, which showcases a chocolate-carved deer and black bear, as well as Nanaimo bars.
