In the modern battlefield their ((infantry soldiers') every move ) is monitored by a battalion, brigade and sometimes even a force commander.
What does "force" mean here? Plus: by all of them together? And is it one of force commanders?

The 'force' is the totality of all troops available. The force commander is the officer in charge of all the forces in a given area, irrespective of whether that 'force' consists of two regiments or seven divisions or three armies.
