After coming back home: "He decided to check to see if they had any messages. There were two for his wife and he saved them both."

So it's an answering machine. "Saved" means "didn't delete" or "made a copy of them in a safe place"?

On my answering machine, after I have heard a new message, I have to choose specifically to "save" it if I want to hear it again later. Otherwise it could get overwritten. So "save" here means "mark as not to be deleted".
