(Jews) held the moral high ground when it came to suffering.

They had an an advantage in this resopect?

The reference is military, those who hold the high ground in battle are better able to see the entire battlefield, and to deploy artillery to their own advantage. "Hold the high ground" means to have an unassailable advantage.
