We have German speeakers on this forum, but I'm not one of them.
I'd recommend starting a new thread with "GERMAN" featured prominently in the title.

second opinion
dear George, hate to be a pain but i want to be sure as this is for a tattoo. I went through another site(and paid) and they translated "fortune's always hiding" as "fortune semper se celat". I did study latin at school(along time ago now though) and do realise that different words can mean the same thing, just wanted your take on it.

Many thanks,Alex

PS the site i went through was Quintus latin translation service

Alex~

Yeah, it's always a good idea to review anything before tattooing it.

"fortune" -- are you sure they said "fortune" and not "fortuna"?
I believe "fortuna" is correct.

"se celat" -- is, as you said, another way of saying the same thing.

So, aside from "fortune" (with an 'e'), I agree with the Quintus translation.

Well, all I can think of is this. Here is a list of Latin quotations mentioning fortune. Note that all use "fortuna".

Fortes fortuna adiuvat - Fortune favors the brave. (Terence)
Fortuna amicos parat, inopia amicos probat - The fortune is preparing friends, the abundance is testing them
Fortuna vitrea est; tum cum splendet frangitur - Fortune is glass; just when it gleams brightest it shatters
Fortuna caeca est - Fortune is blind. (Cicero)
