Border Minutemen: Stemming Tide Like Sticking Finger in Dyke

ABC Radio reports that the border "minutemen" feel like they are making progress helpimg to stem the tide of illegal immigrants but that they feel like their efforts are like "sticking their finger in a dyke." Why do I find it ironic that "minutemen" especially these minutemen would have any concept of what sticking a finger in a dyke is all about.

Main Entry: 1 dike
Pronunciation: 'dIk
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, probably from Old Norse dIk ditch and Middle Low German dIk dam; akin to Old English dIc ditch -- more at DITCH
1 : an artificial watercourse : DITCH
2 a : a bank usually of earth constructed to control or confine water : LEVEE b : a barrier preventing passage especially of something undesirable
3 a : a raised causeway b : a tabular body of igneous rock that has been injected while molten into a fissure

From the story of the little Dutch boy who saved Holland by sticking his finger in a DIKE to stop a leak.

Dyke is listed as an alternate spelling of the word meaning an embankment of earth and rock built to prevent floods. As it was radio, either spelling would technically be correct.

Of course the word "minute" means "exceptionally small; tiny" or "beneath notice; insignificant".

Which may explain why they are using their finger.

I am not sure if you are serious louise, but I will take your post seriously.

I was not, nor would I ever, refer to Roxxxanne as a racist. I was referring to the Minutemen (not the revolutionaries fighting the British 230 years ago, but the kooks running around in the desert with guns today,)

My point was quite specific - it's April Fool's day and there is much play about on the boards, both from the posters and the stalwart hamsters.

I am an irish american italophile who sometimes eats meat.

There is nothing whatever about wanting to stop a huge flood of illegal immigration, and admit people legally which is racist.

Is there nothing whatever about joining an armed vigilante group to look for brown-skinned "illegals" while loudly claiming you are "defending America" against an "invasion" racist?

The minutemen is an obvious strategy for racists in the 21st century. They can fight for their view of defending a White Christian America while trying to avoid the fact that racism is unpopular now.

It is possible there are a few people in the minutemen who aren't racist. It is certain that all the racists are fully behind the minute men.

I absolutely dare you to tell me what is inherently racist about wishing to stop a giant flood of illegal immigration. See if you can do it without guessing peoples' motives.

The minutemen do much more than wish to stop illegal immigration.

The constant efforts to de-humanize immigrants (legal and illegal) referring to working families as "invaders" (actually, being characterized as "a giant flood" would offend me as well). They are using the same rhetoric that was used to exclude the Chinese and persecute Italians and Irish immigrants (whose number includes millions of illegal immigrants).

The rhetoric attacking "multi-culturalism", claiming immigrants destroy "our American culture", desire to ban Spanish and even a developing mythology of race war.

The mythology is ludicrous. These guys fear the Mexicans are planning to take over and institute a "Communist state" in the Western US. This is the same demonization that is at the core of anti-semitic mythology.

If you truly oppose law breaking and this is your reason for opposing what you are calling "illegal" immigration. And, if you reject the other rhetoric of White Christian America and impending race war that is so much a part of the anti-immigrant movement, then fine.

This would seem to mean that you would be against breaking the law in any other area.... and Brandon, it would seem that this is a rather delecate issue for you.

It is immediately obvious that this is a incorrect conclusion. I'm really disappointed that you would make such a superficially obvious false deduction. I expect better from you. Because I regard having millions of illegal aliens in the country as undesirable and dangerous, that hardly means that I have to push for increased penalties for jaywalking. By the way, it also doesn't mean that I am not in favor of legal immigration, which is the way most of us or our ancestors got here. Whatever some of the Minutemen may have said about it, stopping almost unchecked illegal immigration at our borders is absolutely the right thing to do.

The point I am making is that the minutemen, and the anti-immigrant (or anti-illegal-immigrant althought the rhetoric is anti-both) they spring from, use rhetoric that is racist, and support a racist belief system.

We can argue about what to do about the millions of people serving us hamburgers and mowing our lawns (and raising families) without government permission. That is a theme that is being adequately debated in other threads.

This discussion is about the minutemen-- A band of kooks with running around in the desert with guns and yelling at poor migrant workers. They have a weird mythology of race war and a rhetoric of a White Christian America.

If you want to stop people breaking the law to come here, the reasonable answer is to support legislation that has stricter enforcement on employers while increasing legal ways for businesses to get the labor they need. I feel it is important to treat the people here fairly and humanely-- and the McCain-Kennedy bill, which I support, addresses this.

But this thread isn't about that. It is about the Minutemen.

Whatever you believe about the issue-- running around the desert with guns with the support of Neo-Nazi groups is more than a bit weird.

In my eyes this is a lot scarier than Paulette, the nice Brazilian girl who serves me my morning coffee at the local donut shop.

I don't suppose you'd care to offer some evidence that this is so. If this is true, then I must be a racist (which I absolutely deny), since you claim that the mere fact of wanting to fix a massive illegal immigration problem makes one a racist.
