It must have been cold and drafty, even with those rug-like blankets wrapped around you.

The link below takes you to a NYT article which summarizes two studies which appeared in yesterday's issue of Science magazine. Unfortunately, unless you are a subscriber, you can't get to the original studies.

Council calls for lower fluoride limit in water

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The high levels of fluoride that occur naturally in some drinking water can cause tooth and bone damage and should be reduced, the National Research Council said Wednesday.

The study did not analyze the benefits or risks of adding fluoride to drinking water. Instead it looked at the current maximum limit of 4 milligrams per liter. Approximately 200,000 people live in communities where that level occurs naturally in water.

The council suggested further studies to establish a new maximum level, but noted that the problems associated with exposure to fluoride are very small at 2 milligrams per liter and less. Approximately 1.4 million people have drinking water with natural fluoride levels of 2.0 to 3.9 milligrams per liter, said the council, an arm of the National Academy of Sciences.

More than 160 million Americans live in communities with artificially fluoridated water, which contains between 0.7 and 1.2 milligrams of fluoride per liter.

Lots of rain here- but mild.

Danon,
such coaches needed 2 days for the distance Munich - Salzburg.
The avarage distance between two "stations" was about 25 km. Depending on the roads and the terrain the maximal speed was about 7,5km/hour. Changing horses
could take up to 2 hours.
In some reports I found that you not only used blankets, but also filled the coach with hay or straw.

Cool <not cold> and sunny here in Toronto.

I'm tempted to poke around in the garden, but we've been reminded/ warned that 1/4 of the season's snow is still ahead of us.

Cool Hi Everyone:
44 degrees in my area of NJ. Crazy weather all week! Was in NY Saturday at BB Kings on 42nd St. Great show! Sunny in NY, cold and rainy back in NJ. Typical March weather. Should be back here more, now that I've replaced my old system. Lots of bells and whistles. Great reading the posts and the wonderful pictures. Great thread! Very Happy

ul,
Yes, the straw is really good in cold weather. I have been following the latest reports about the ancient Celtic man discovered in the Alps - he was wearing very good footwear for the trek - a waterproofed leather with straw padding/insulation. The man was evidently ambushed (probably for his bronze axe - very valuable at the time) and wounded with an arrow. From all accounts he was very intelligent and well to do.
It is curious and interesting that in those past days people actually thought traveling by horse was the fastest and most state of the art way to go. I wonder what our decendents will say about our thoughts on travel in the early 21st century. grin

ehBeth,
That is something that will get your blood flowing - classical flaminco. I think of Segovia and Diaz when I hear those sounds.........

From the bird flu article linked above.

""We cannot contain this thing anymore. Nature is in control," said Robert G. Webster, a virologist at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., who has been studying the virus since it emerged in 1997."

I read an article about him just this past week in Smithsonian Magazine. He is the premier researcher and expert about the virus. Regularly travels all over the world to test, and advise.

sue, my names listed on a zillion dockets. Activist intimidation not new - just more aggressive since gw-the-stewart-of-the-land-buscho - and the rest of the conservative goose steppers decided the earth <and all residing on it> belongs to him and the oil companies.

Yep, nature has the final say. Wonder what the putz will do when the next huge storm hits washington or crawford?

Blame God
