Miller, your post makes no sense.

Reverend Meeks was soundly scolded by the African-American community for using such a term and he agreed not to repeat it.
Many black males are afraid of Dr. Rice. I wonder why.
My guess would be for reasons similar to why she is feared by white men, yellow transvestites, black women, Russian carpet-layers and all forest creatures... afer meeting and shaking hands with Condi, Martha Stewart was treated for frostbite.

So basically you're saying that the statement about black men being "afraid" of Rice is a speculation of yours based on your observations of - what, black magazines? Essence is edited and largely written by black women. Are black women scared of her, too?
I'd be as solidly based in fact (zero) to speculate you were scared of black men. It was a stupid statement.

Everybody is afraid of "black men" when they are walking in a bad neighborhood, or don't you recall the famous statement made by JESSE JACKSON, Snood?
You know the one in which Jesse said that when he heard footsteps behind him, he looked and was relieved to find that the footsteps DID NOT belong to blacks but rather Whites.
AND THAT WAS JESSE, SNOOD!!!!
Way to take the least relevant tangent possible, massagatto. You've a talent for that.

Ehh, and how is this anything to do with black women or black men, specifically?
You take the white equivalents of Jet or Essence, you see a lot of bright lights in "Drama, Science, Medicine" covered in those? Many interviews with succesful politicians?
No, didnt think so. Sex, gossip, pop, beauty, celebrity sell, yeah. "Drama, Science, Medicine" dont. Period. Whether you talking blacks, whites or whatever.

As a matter of fact, why do these black publications fail to recognize the contributions of many other cultured and very well educated ( Drama, Science, Medicine, etc ) black Americans?

I haven't read any of these magazines lately, Miller but tell me, do they feature any of the following as good models for African-Americans?
( I think not)
Thomas Sowell
Bill Cosby
Shelby Steele
Alan Keyes
J. C. Watts
I will never ever forget one of the articles I read a few years ago in Ebony.
It regurgitated the theory that Aristotle had "stolen" the philosophic ideas he used from the Egyptian Library at Alexandria( Of course, the article insisted that Egypt was a country run by Black people and that Cleoptra was black.
This kind of trash, instead of articles about men like those above are found in the self-serving African-American publications.
Of course, Cleopatra was not black; Egypt was not run by blacks and Aristotle could not have stolen his philosophy from the library at Alexandria because the Library was not built until after Aristotle's death.
Alan Keyes as good models for African-Americans? I should bloody well hope not. The man is outrageous. Thats like proposing Pat Robertson as a good model for white Americans.
I was going to say the exact same thing, nimh.
I guess any black conservative (hell, there's gotta be a hundred of 'em!) will do as a "role model", in massagatto's estimation.
snood wrote:Way to take the least relevant tangent possible, massagatto. You've a talent for that.
I'm glad, someone has some "talent".
Mr.Nimh might be astonished to know that there are MILLIONS of African-Americans who hold the same religious convictions held by Alan Keyes.
I can, of course, provide evidence, but just to start, does Mr. Nihm know the stance taken by the large majority of African-American ministers vis a vis Homosexuality? It parallels the ideas of Alan Keyes.
I do have, of course, a link to the religious convictions held by many of the Baptist African-Americans in this country, Mr. Nimh.
Would you like to read them?
BernardR, I just received the lastest copy of ESSENCE in the mail.
Typical of this publication is the following article, which lists the 10 top best dressed black men.
Andre 3000
Dhani Jones
Kofi Annan
Barack Obama
JayZ
Wynton Marsalis
Michael Jordan
Andre Leon Talley
Kanye West
Diddy
Quote:the stance taken by the large majority of African-American ministers vis a vis Homosexuality?
Yes, they're against it as are most Hispanic males.
Hey, that's actually kinda-sorta on topic!
I just went looking for news items on Obama and saw that he's going to be on the cover of Men's Vogue, too.
I think this is more of a good thing than a bad thing -- appeal is appeal is appeal, and I think people generally like the idea of having a well-dressed, charismatic person in the White House (Kennedy, say) than not (Nixon, say). It holds the danger of shading into Slick Willy/ Breck Girl territory, though.
(Miller, did nimh's point about who equivalent magazines for/by/of white people tend to feature make the slightest dent?)

No sense to a white male?
At the beginning of this thread, Sozobe wrote about Obama
Things I've always liked about him:
Public speaking skills: This guy is GOOD.
Bipartisan appeal: He did amazing work in connecting to Republicans in Illinois, and has gotten a good reaction among many Republicans I know.
Savvy: He's made a lot of good decisions, politically.
Charisma: He's got it.
Idealism: This goes back to what I said re: inexperienced -- I think it's something that people really like to see, and can be especially good when paired with young.
Humor: Slightly different than charisma, and what made me start this thread. Read Maureen Dowd's column about his performance at a press dinner on Saturday (?), and it sounds like he did an amazing job.
*********************************************************
I would strongly urge Sozobe to check the records of African-Americans who have run in venues where there were not HUGE numbers of African-American voters.
Obama's Public Speaking Skills are as good as many politicians. He is, however, fond of generalizations and worn out nostrums.
Bi Partisan Appeal- You really must be kidding , Sozobe! Do you really think that Obama would win any votes in the South and the Southwest which are not African-American?
I think the Republicans are salivating at the prospect that the Democrats would be dumb enough to run him!
You do know, Sozobe, that around 90% of African-Americans voted for Kerry, do you not?
How many additional African-American votes would Obama gather? Another 6%?
How many Hispanics votes would he get, Sozobe?
If you know the politics in the large American cities, Sozobe, you know that Hispanic Americans do NOT trust African-American politicians of any stripe. You also may be aware that because of growth of Hispanic populations in large American cities, there is a fierce rivalry between the new aspirants to political office in those cities-Hispanics--and African-Americans.
How many votes would he get from Whites all over the country, Sozobe?
If you think that his presence on a national ticket would help the Democratic Party, I must say that you need a refresher course on how the political system works in the USA.
You do know who Representative Ford from Tennessee is, don't you, sozobe?
A very well spoken African-American with lots of legislative experience in the House of Representatives and a well honed organization. HE WILL BE STEAMROLLERED IN TENNESSEE RUNNING FOR SENATOR. Running in his district, which is 66% African-American, Ford can do well but he will be murdered in the general election.
Savvy- Savvy? He is so savvy that he uses a Hispanic Nanny in a city that is 40% African American and he is so savvy that he has cut off relations with PUSH--Jesse Jackson's group--Now, of course, Jesse would have to hold his nose and go along with him but to say he is savvy about Chicago politics is not to know Chicago Politics.
Charisma? He is a skinny wimp with a bad complexion!!! Where is the Charisma there? He was, of course, labelled as an inefficient leader and a temporizer by one of the most intelligent audiences he could ever have--his colleagues at the Harvard Law Review!!
Idealism? What Idealism? What Idealism did he display when he was President of the Harvard Law Review? What Idealism does he have stemming from his horrendous childhood when his father, a Kenyan, abandoned his white mother in Hawaii? What Idealism does he have after his cocaine use? Will he be quick to absolve everyone else for minor "quirks"? What Idealism did he pick up when he attended Muslim school for two years during his elementary school years.
Humor? The only thing humorous about Obama is that he thinks he won a great victory being elected Senator. ANYONE who knows Illinois poiltics knows he would have been soundly thrashed by Senator Fitzgerald had he not resigned. Of course, Obama would have received almost every African-American vote in Illinois, but that would have not been enough!

I don't presume to speak for Miller, but I think he will agree that abominable magazines like Ebony especially aiming at African-Americans and trash like Rolling Stone for the decerebrated among us, do exist.
But the dfference is that Rolling Stone, even with its foul language and weird articles never ran stories touting Africa as the foundation of almost all of the philosophical and scientific knowledge of the West!!!
Quote:Obama would have received almost every African-American vote in Illinois,
Are most of the Blacks in Illinois in Cook County. I think you remember, that Cook County is very famous, for encouraging
voters to vote once, twice and even three times. I know that all City of Chicago and State of Illinois employees must vote in all
elections. If they don't, big trouble for them could result.
Miller- There are at least 1,200,000 African-Americans in Chicago's Cook County and about 65% of them are registered to vote. Obama got 95% of those votes. Of course, African-Americans are not racially biased--oh no- They would vote for Bugs Bunny if he was declared to be African-American
